Pardon Our Dust!

Campus Recreation has two exciting construction projects happening this summer that will continue through late August. One involves our office suites and the other involves the weight room. We dismantled the office that our Director of Recreation, Janice DeMonsi, previously worked in and are now knocking down the wall between that office room and the room where the vending machines lived. At the end of the construction period, we will have one larger work office where all 14 student coordinators will work next to one another; and the vending machines will be visible from the hallway. As a result of this project, the vending machines will be unavailable until September 2nd

In the weight room, we will have a new desk installed Wednesday, August 3rd. This smaller desk will be located at the entrance of the weight room. Beginning Monday, August 8th the old weight room desk will be removed, and one storage unit as well as the stereo system will be relocated to back wall of the weight room. We will determine what machines and stretching mats will be placed in the new space after all of the construction is complete. We are excited to see how much space we gain and what the potential is.

Please pardon all of our dust as these two great projects continue over this month!

Spotlight: Jessie S.

Meet Jessie S.! Jessie is a rising junior here at Santa Clara University where she is pursuing a major in accounting with a minor in retail studies. However, she is much more than a student to us; Jessie is one of our Camp Coordinators who has been with Campus Recreation since she was a camper herself! Growing up in Los Gatos, Jessie came to SCU for two weeks every summer starting when she was six years old to participate in the Bronco Kidz All Sports Camp. She was a camper for about six years! After she couldn’t be enrolled in the camp as a camper anymore, she joined our CIT program and became a Counselor in Training. She was a CIT for three years through high school, and then when she came to Santa Clara University, she became a coach! After loving her experience as a coach, she pursued and got the job of Camp Coordinator this summer. Out of all her experiences, Jessie has had the most fun in her job as Camp Coordinator; though she appreciates her many years of experience with kids, she prefers to manage the business side of things. Her responsibilities as Coordinator have included managing budget, coordinating teams, organizing excel spreadsheets, lots of computer work, managing CIT’s, and managing parent relations. Her favorite part of the job, however, is being able to do things the way she has always envisioned them. Because she has had so much experience with the Bronco Kidz All Sports Camp, she knows what works and what doesn’t, and it is rewarding for her to be able to make the camp just as successful and fun for the campers as it was for her. When asked about her words of ad vice for her past, current, and future campers, she said, “Always stay involved in what you’re passionate about, you will get results that you are excited for and proud of.” Thanks Jessie for your years of dedication and support!

Jessie is one of four Campus Rec employees that have all been with us since they were campers! Vince S. has been a camper and is now a coach. Matt S. has been a camper, a CIT, and is now a coach. And Owen O. has been a camper, a CIT, and is now assistant coordinator!

Campus Recreation History

Did you know that the Leavey Center pool used to be covered by an over-head cover? The bubble was installed in 1975 and provided cover from the sun for swimmers and anyone else enjoying the pool. The cover was then permanently removed approximately in the spring of 1990.

The picture above is from early 1990 before the cover was removed. Note that the pool is not an Olympic-sized pool yet either. In the picture below, one gets a glimpse of what the pool bubble cover looked like from the inside.

A special thanks to the Department of Archives of Special Collections for providing old The Santa Clara newspapers and photos.

Congratulations to Lexie Smallwood

Lexie Smallwood, president of the equestrian team, won her class at IHSA Nationals that took place from May 5th through May 8th in Lexington, Kentucky at the famous Kentucky Horse Park built for the World Equestrian Games and used to host Olympic trials. She is now the Intermediate Fences National Champion.
In total, there are approximately 6,700 riders who are a part of the IHSA. These riders compete throughout the year to accumulate points and when a rider reaches 35 points they make it through the post season and subsequently move up to the next division which is regionals. The top two from regionals (bay area schools) then move onto zones (all west coast schools), and the top two from zones move onto nationals.
Lexie, after winning her class at zone finals had about a month to train until she left for Kentucky, she worked hard not only practicing for nationals but also to help pay for her extra practice expenses, alongside balancing her classes and homework. Since a horse property is relatively hard to come by in the Bay Area, she has to drive nearly 30 miles south every week for a one hour practice. Most of the competitive teams that she encountered from the East Coast had huge barns on their college campus, with very expensive horses given to them by former alumni and donors. Meanwhile, our equestrian team rely on random amounts that come and go as they get bought and sold, never really being able to form the horse-rider bond that is so paramount to success in this sport. Despite all this, SCU equestrian team finished their last show of the year as Reserve Champions, and Lexie Smallwood won the nationals. We are so proud of Lexie and the rest of the team!!

To read more about Lexie's journey, check out this article in The Santa Clara!

Michael Kelly Classic

The Michael Kelly 3 on 3 Memorial Basketball Tournament honors a dear friend of many of us in Campus Recreation that tragically passed away in 2013. Michael was a proud Bronco in every sense of the word and embodied all that is truly special about this university and community.

We are so thankful for all of those that were able to come out and support this event. We had 9 men's teams and 3 women's teams compete to take home the championship title and raise money for the Michael Kelly Endowed Scholarship. Thank you to all those who volunteered and helped make this event a success.

Rugby in Argentina!

On March 20, 2016, thirty-two players, two coaches, and Father Paul Mariani arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina to spend their Spring Break week touring, playing, volunteering, and adventuring with the locals. Their week consisted of many admirable and exciting events. On Monday, the team traveled to the local rugby club of Liceo Naval to participate in a practice session with a former Argentinean national player. On Tuesday, the SCUTS traveled to an orphanage located outside the city where they played games with the excited kids and donated clothing from SCU’s very own Bronco Kidz All Sports Camp. Following the trip to the orphanage, the team won their first match 34 to 21 against Cuidad de Buenos Aires. Excited about their first win, the team was given the day off on Wednesday and they opted to further explore the city’s culture and traditions by visiting the local art museums and opera house. Thursday came with their second and final match against Liceo Naval in which our SCUTS lost 24 to 22. Friday, being another day off for the team, was a day for celebrations in the neighborhood of Boca for Good Friday and Easter. On Saturday, the team traveled back to Liceo Naval to watch their men’s team play in the division one of rugby in Argentina. On Sunday, the team accompanied by Father Mariani, attended Easter mass at Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (the most famous Catholic church in Buenos Aires) before departing to return back home after a long, but worthwhile trip.  Campus Recreation congratulates our SCUTS Men’s Rugby program for their successes in Buenos Aires and wishes them well on their future endeavors. The team was sure to take lots of photos of their trip so check them out!

Congratulations to Cameron McCarthy!!

The National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) is hosting its 40th national
championship this year in the West, Midwest, and Eastern areas of the United
States. However, this year will mark the third year that women are able to
compete. Santa Clara University’s Cameron McCarthy will be competing in this
year’s championship. Cameron is a junior here at SCU studying Business
Management and Political Science. She began boxing at Santa Clara University on
a whim and fell in love with the sport. She even kept up with the sport while studying
abroad in Argentina. When asked about her experience, she said, “I boxed with a
world champion boxer, Miguel Angel Castellani.  After my program ended I
volunteered with Fight for Peace, in Rio de Janiero, Brazil for three weeks. I
worked in a poor favela, Complexo de Mare, and helped empower girls through
boxing. It was the most incredible experience of my life. I really hope I am able to
go back.” As she is going to be completing her 11th fight this week, Cameron
reminds us that boxing has taught her more about her passions and herself than
anything that she has encountered before. Campus Recreation wishes her luck in
her journey through the championships!

Employee of the week (4/4/16)

Joe has been a Malley employee for almost 4 years now. He is originally from Hawaii and is a Bioengineering major. He has been an incredible asset to the Campus Recreation team and is an extremely hard worker. We are lucky to have had him with us for the past four years and wish him nothing but the best after graduation! Congrats Joe!!

Congrats to Lexie Smallwood!!

Lexie is a junior Biology major that has been the president of the equestrian team for two years now. She competes in the IHSA(intercollegiate horse show association) as a part of the equestrian team. The division she was placed into upon joining the team as a freshman was the Intermediate Fences, the second most advanced division. This placement was based on her high school (and earlier) competition results. Part of the IHSA is a system of advancing through the divisions upon accumulating enough points, based on show results. When a rider reaches 35 points, they are qualified for the post season in that division and subsequently move up to the next (more advanced) division. This year, Lexie "pointed out" of Intermediate fences, which qualified her for regional finals. The top two from regionals (bay area schools) move onto zones (all west coast schools), and the top two from zones move onto nationals! This weekend, Lexie won her class at zone finals which qualified her for nationals in Lexington, KY. Congrats Lexie and good luck at Nationals!!

Effective Saturday, March 19, the weight room policies have been update. The apparel policy has been changed to: For hygiene and cleanliness: apparel that covers the trunk is now required.

The new policy is "Apparel needs to cover the trunk". This means that all patrons must wear a top that covers their body completely from the armpits down.
